Inspiration Station!
We’d love you to meet Lionel Maxted, 82 years young.
Lionel has been a member at Bay City Gym since 1987. He joined to get on top of some old rugby injuries that had been niggling him. Back then he worked out about 3 times a week and mainly did fitness based training as he loved running the Rotorua marathon.
Over the years he developed an interest in biking. He and his wife Kaye, used to be seen often getting around the Napier/Hastings area on their tandem bike. In fact, he and his mate thought it would be a great idea to bike the length of New Zealand when they both turned 70 back in 2010. We were lucky enough to follow their progress via text messages from Lionel with daily updates and a map in the gym for the members to follow along.
Lionel’s seen Bay City Gym change and evolve over the years and say’s that most of all he loves the friendly members and environment.
Most day’s you’ll find him here working out where he loves doing weights to work on his strength and body weight exercises such as pullups for mobility and challenge.
Lionel has always been an inspiration to me. He is one of those members that I look at from my office desk when I’m feeling stressed and unmotivated where I give myself a pep talk to get up and go out and join him!
Exercise Tip:
- Who inspires and motivates you? Surround yourself with others that have inspirational workout routines or that lead by example and you too will create a healthy exercise plan that you are happy and content with.
- Don’t have a friend that you can co-ordinate your gym times with? Join a class and you’ll meet people that become your regular gym mates.
