More Than a Workout: The Power of Small Group Coaching

Article by – Chrissy Newall – Owner, Coach and Group Fitness Instructor

You’ve probably seen it happening in the gym — a small group of people, moving through a workout with focus, encouragement, and a trainer guiding them through every rep. It’s not a bootcamp. It’s not a personal training session either. So, what is it?

Welcome to Small Group Personal Training

It’s the sweet spot between 1-on-1 personal training and large fitness classes — offering the individual attention you need, with the community and energy you crave.

What Exactly Is Small Group Training?

Small group training is a session led by a qualified personal trainer with a maximum of around 6–8 participants. Think of it as personal training, just with a few teammates by your side. You’ll still get expert guidance, tailored progressions, and accountability — but you’ll also benefit from the shared motivation of training alongside others.

Each workout is designed with purpose:

  • Structured strength training
  • Progressive programming
  • Individual modifications to suit your level
  • Supportive, like-minded people keeping you consistent

Why It Works

We all know that motivation can come and go. But consistency? That’s where results are made. Small group training makes it easier to show up, stay accountable, and train smarter — not just harder.

It’s especially powerful for those who:

  • Want to get stronger but don’t know where to start
  • Need help with form, progressions, or avoiding injury
  • Like being part of a community (but still want focused coaching)
  • Are tired of going it alone and getting stuck

The Real Benefits

More coaching than a class, more affordable than 1-on-1

Confidence and skill-building — you learn how to train, not just what to do

Variety, challenge, and a plan — you’re not winging it anymore

You belong to something — and that makes it easier to stay committed

“Small group training has completely changed how I feel about working out. I’m stronger, more confident, and I actually look forward to coming to the gym.” — one of our Bay City Gym members

At Bay City Gym, we offer small group training under our Hinge Fitness program — but more than that, we believe in making fitness feel personal, purposeful, and supportive.

If you’ve been curious, now’s a great time to give it a go. The door’s open — your spot’s waiting.
