Why Motivation Doesn’t Last (And That’s Completely Normal)

Article by – Chrissy Newall – Owner, Coach and Group Fitness Instructor.

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is that almost everyone joins a gym feeling motivated.

Maybe they’ve decided it’s time to improve their health, get stronger, lose weight, or simply feel better. Whatever the reason, they walk through the doors ready to make a change.

The challenge is that motivation doesn’t last forever, and that’s completely normal.

Life gets busy. Work becomes stressful. Family commitments take priority. Some days we’re full of energy, while on others the couch looks far more appealing than the gym.

The members who achieve the best long term results aren’t necessarily the most motivated. They’re the ones who have built exercise into their routine.

They don’t rely on feeling inspired every day. They’ve simply decided that looking after themselves is something they do.

One of the things I love most about Bay City Gym is watching members encourage each other. Sometimes it’s a quick “See you Wednesday”, sometimes it’s celebrating a personal best, and sometimes it’s simply noticing when someone hasn’t been in for a while. Those little moments help turn motivation into routine.

The same goes for booking classes, training with a friend, working with a personal trainer, or joining one of our member challenges. These aren’t just ways to exercise; they create accountability and make it easier to keep showing up when life gets in the way.

I’ve also learnt that it’s okay if your goals change throughout the year. Sometimes you’re chasing a personal best, and other times success simply means keeping your healthy habits going through a busy season.

If your motivation has dipped lately, don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to everyone.

Instead of waiting to feel motivated again, focus on creating a routine that makes exercise part of your week.

Because motivation is what gets us started.

Routine is what keeps us going.
