Do You Actually Know What Your Body Can Do?

Article by – Chrissy Newall – Owner, Coach and Group Fitness Instructor.

Most of us have a comfort zone when we exercise. We use the equipment we know, choose weights we feel confident lifting and tend to stick with exercises that feel familiar.

But it does raise an interesting question: do you actually know what your body is capable of?

Sometimes we simply don’t know what we don’t know. You might wonder whether your technique is right, whether you could safely lift more, why a particular movement feels awkward, or which exercises would actually help you achieve your goals.

This is where working with a personal trainer can make a real difference.

Good personal training isn’t about having someone stand beside you counting repetitions. It’s about having someone who understands where you’re starting, watches how you move and knows when to challenge you, when to adjust something and how to keep progressing you.

We see this all the time at Bay City Gym. Issy is a great example. When she started training, she was deadlifting just the bar. Working with her personal trainer Milli, she learnt the technique, gradually built her strength and recently achieved an impressive 65kg deadlift personal best.

She didn’t walk into the gym knowing she could deadlift 65kg. She built towards it.

And that’s one of the things I love about personal training. You don’t just become stronger or fitter. You learn more about your own body and what you’re capable of, which gives you confidence in your training too.

So, here’s a question worth asking yourself:

Are you training at the level you’re capable of, or simply at the level you’re comfortable with?

You might be capable of considerably more than you think.
