One of the most common conversations I have with members goes something like this:
“Chrissy, I’ve been coming to the gym for a few weeks now, but I don’t feel like anything is changing.”
Usually, they are looking at the scales, the mirror, or comparing themselves to where they thought they would be by now. The truth is, some of the most important results happen before we can see them.
Before someone loses weight, they may start sleeping better, eating better, having more energy, and feeling less stressed. They might notice that everyday activities are becoming easier, they are walking further, lifting heavier weights, recovering faster, or simply feeling more confident walking into the gym.
Those are all real results.
The challenge is that many of us have been taught to measure success by one thing alone: the scales. While weight loss can absolutely be a goal, it is only one measure of progress. Some people become fitter, stronger, and healthier while the scales barely move at all. That can be frustrating if weight is the only thing you are looking at. The other thing worth remembering is that fitness is not a quick fix.
Think about some of the achievements you are most proud of. Completing a qualification, saving for a home, building a career, or raising a family all take time, patience, and consistent effort. We understand that worthwhile things rarely happen overnight.
Fitness is no different.
Strength takes time to build. Fitness improves gradually. Healthy habits are developed through repetition, not perfection. The people who achieve the best long term results are rarely the ones who make the biggest changes the fastest. More often, they are the people who find a routine they enjoy and keep showing up. This is also where having a plan can make a difference.
Sometimes people are working hard but are missing a piece of the puzzle. They may need a little more intensity, better recovery, a different training approach, or simply some guidance on what to focus on next. That is why checking in with a trainer can be so valuable. A small adjustment to your training can often create momentum again and help you continue progressing.
If you feel like your results have stalled, take a moment to look at the bigger picture.
- Are you stronger than you were three months ago?
- Do you have more energy?
- Are you moving more freely?
- Do you feel more confident than when you started?
If the answer is yes, then chances are you are making more progress than you realise. Because the best results are not always the ones you see first. Often, they are the ones you feel first.
